What’s in the B1 grammar test
The questions cover the grammar topics in the B1 level of the Common European Framework (CEFR). After the test, you’ll see your score for each topic and a link to practise the ones you got wrong:
- Tenses: present simple vs continuous, present perfect vs past simple, past tenses, future forms
- Sentences: first and second conditional, relative clauses, reported speech, the passive
- Verbs: must, have to, should, -ing or to, used to
- Words: comparatives and superlatives, quantifiers (much, many, a few), articles
What does B1 level mean?
B1 is the “independent user” level. A B1 learner can deal with most everyday situations, describe experiences and plans, and give short reasons for opinions. In grammar, it means you can use the main tenses correctly, talk about real and imaginary situations, and connect your ideas in longer sentences.
FAQ
What score do I need to be B1?
As a rough guide, if you regularly score 80% or more on the 25- or 50-question test, your grammar is solid at B1 and you’re ready for the B2 grammar test. Between 50% and 80%, you’re on the way, so use the topic breakdown to see what to practise. Below 50%, start with the A2 test.
Is this an official B1 exam?
No. It’s a free practice test that checks grammar only. Official B1 exams such as Cambridge B1 Preliminary also test reading, writing, listening and speaking. But grammar is the base of all four skills, so this is a quick way to see where you are.
Why are the questions different every time?
Each test is a random selection from a bank of 75 questions, so you can take it several times without memorising the answers. Your best score for each test length is saved in your browser.
